Tooth Extractions Near You
Dentists do all they can to save an unhealthy tooth. Sometimes, however, that is not enough, and the tooth needs to be extracted to preserve or repair your smile.
At our neighbourhood dental centre, we provide this service to every patient who needs it. If this applies to you, contact one of our dentists near you; they can alleviate your worries.
Reasons for Extraction
Your dentist may recommend tooth extraction for multiple reasons:
- Gum disease
- A failed root canal
- Preparing for orthodontic treatment
- Overcrowding
- Severe decay
- Oral trauma
- Impacted teeth
To determine if this service is right for your case, your Grande Prairie dentist will physically evaluate your oral cavity and snap a series of x-rays. They will also talk to you about the details of your oral health and your preferences. Once you’re given the go-ahead, the treatment can begin.
Steps of a Simple Tooth Extraction
A simple tooth extraction is a common process. It is done when a patient’s tooth has fully erupted above the gum line and does not require invasive measures to remove it. The steps of the treatment are:
- Anesthesia is provided to numb the site and keep you comfortable throughout the appointment. Stronger sedation can be provided with your dentist’s approval, including nitrous oxide and oral sedation.
- The tooth is gently loosened in its socket with special tools. This makes the actual extraction much simpler.
- Forceps are employed to rock the tooth back and forth before finally removing it.
- Next, the area is thoroughly cleaned of any debris. A gauze is placed over the site to manage the bleeding; you may need to bite it gently to keep it there.
- Your dentist will instruct you on looking after your smile at home, such as taking over-the-counter medications and eating soft foods for the first few days.
A follow-up appointment might be scheduled so your dentist can assess your recovery and ensure everything goes smoothly.
